The viral pandemic, protests, and political posturing have caused many of us to drift into the quietude of reflection that borders on passivity. I want to suggest it is the right moment to step forward into the future of the Wesleyan movement of the Holy Spirit. Our churches, the laity and ministers need to hear a positive message about the future.
We were all ready for the establishment of a new work of God after General Conference which never happened! The postponed General Conference is now scheduled for August 29 – September 7, 2021. The new denomination will launch in September 2021. That is a mere fifteen months from this date.
What should we do during the next fifteen months before the establishment of the new denomination?
First, use the time to discuss with your church leadership the value of joining the WCA as supporting church and minister. (https://wesleyancovenant.org) Joining the WCA will link you with hundreds of other churches across the USA and give you a voice at the convening conference following the UMC General Conference. It will also link you with the East Ohio WCA as a voting member. This is important as decisions are being made for our future.
Second, contact the East Ohio WCA arranging an information session hosted by your church. We will send WCA members from our board to make a presentation explaining the WCA and answering questions from your membership. Dr. Chet Harris is available to preach on Sunday morning and meet with your membership after the worship service. Your minister must contact us to make the arrangements. (330-936-8531 or Recontre2@aol.com)
Third, ministers are welcome to contact Dr. Chet Harris for a one on one chat about the WCA. There are multiple ways to accomplish this conversation. You are encouraged to contact Dr. Chet and discuss how you want to meet. For many churches this is an excellent place to begin the journey of becoming a member of the WCA.
Fourth, we want to encourage every minister and layperson to reach out to others in your circle of influence. Begin discussing the future of our denomination and the hope and purpose of the WCA. The new movement is dependent on grassroots support and encouragement. You will make a difference in the future of the Wesleyan Covenant Association.
All for the Kingdom,
Dr. Chet Harris
Director East Ohio WCA
