The Wesleyan Covenant Association of East Ohio is excited to invite you to our upcoming informational gatherings. We are eager to describe the recently launched Global Methodist Church as an option for congregations interested in disaffiliation from the United Methodist Church. Now is the time to prudently examine the possibility of separating from the UMC.
Why now? Succinctly, our Bishop has provided an exit plan that precisely follows paragraph 2553 in our Book of Discipline, but one which will cease to exist on December 31, 2023. We have no guarantee of a future exit plan that is as gracious as the process outlined in 2553.
The long-standing tension between ‘Progressives and Traditionalist’ or ‘Liberals and Evangelicals’ has come to a point that toleration is not possible by either side. Yes, we can continue living in pseudo-harmony by ignoring the chasm-like differences in theology and polity – differences which will increasingly become apparent in the future. We need to recognize, however, that changing definitions of words and biblical concepts – as well as defiance to our Book of Discipline – does not work. Both sides have just become more frustrated with the results. Now is the time to recognize that a separation will equally enhance Progressive and Traditionalist styles of ministry, views of missional ministry, and core theological understanding. I believe that by removing the perpetual conflict we have endured over the course of fifty years, the Kingdom of God will prosper in ways beyond our imagination.
The East Ohio Global Methodist Church and Wesleyan Covenant Association invites you to attend one of fourteen informational meeting that will be held through the East Ohio Conference. Hopefully one of the meetings is conveniently located near you. During these meetings, we will address four areas of concern:
1. How we came to this place in our United Methodist history
2. Information about the Global Methodist Church
3. Navigating through the Disaffiliation process
4. Specific information for Clergy desiring to withdraw and Laity as they begin ministry in the GMC
5. Q & A will conclude our time together Again, we encourage you to attend this opportunity to gain a new perspective of future ministry and understand the reason and way to disaffiliate from the UMC..
