“As Christians, the question is not whether we should or should not be a theologian,” said Oklahoma laywoman Cara Nicklas at “Transformed! the Wesleyan Covenant Association’s Fourth Global Gathering” at Asbury United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, November 9, 2019. “If a broad definition of the word theologian is one who seeks to know God, then each of us, as Christians, must be a theologian. In a world that is increasingly unchurched, where people are dismissive of our faith or downright hostile to it, we don’t have the luxury, if we ever did, of completely farming out the critical work of being good theologians.”
Nicklas went on to say, “Friends, here’s the thing. Many people from our bishops to church officials to the leaders of various advocacy groups are coming to the painful realization that there will be a separation of the United Methodist Church next year. It’s not my task to talk about that this morning. But I want to make an observation…. In the near future we who are called traditionalist will no longer be able to tell ourselves that it is other people keeping us from being a healthy, vibrant branch of the church catholic. It will all be on us. And we have got to up our game. In a postmodern world where truth is malleable, where people are cynical, where information – good and bad – is found by a few clicks on a keyboard, and where there is heightened distrust and skepticism of the church, we must become theologians who are fully equipped to be ambassadors of Christ in these changing times.”
